Welcome

The purpose of this site is to introduce Tasawuf (Sufism) to newcomers or anyone who has an interest in this subject. The objective is to clarify certain concepts and provide a deeper insight to travellers already on the path.

– Salie Manie

What is Sufism/Tasawuf?

This a widely misunderstood concept which ranges from it being heretical to it being a cult or a new religion.

Tasawuf can be described as the spiritual or inner dimension of Islam. Tasawuf or Sufism is not a new or alternative religion! On the contrary, it has as an essential requirement; the scrupulous adherence to the dictates of the Shariah. Complying with the laws of the Shariah (Quran and Sunnah) forms the very foundation on which Tasawuf is built. There can be no Tasawuf without Shariah.

Tasawuf is the soul of Islam. Its function is the purification of the heart (Tazkiyah) from the lowly animal-like qualities of lust, anger, hatred, jealousy, love of the world, greed, vanity, etc.

Its key objective is the adornment of the heart with the praiseworthy attributes of repentance, humility, patience, gratefulness, contemplation, etc.

Tasawuf is a specific methodology on how to journey towards Allah. It is not a hit and miss affair but a science of clear processes and practices on how to achieve knowledge of the Almighty, and how to purify the heart. This why the seeker should be attached (take Bayah) from a true and perfect guide (Shaykh or Murshid). The Kamil (perfect) Shaykh has reached a level of purification of the heart, which makes him the ideal person to guide and instruct, those who wish to follow the same path.

The goal is to earnestly strive to follow the Murshid’s example and teachings on how to transform and purify our inner so that we can obtain the pleasure of Allah SWT. Tasawuf is about developing good character and becoming true slaves to Allah.

My Message

There is a saying : “Knowledge is the lost property of a believer”. I thus felt that I had an obligation to spread and make available whatever new knowledge I acquired along the way.

My target group are newcomers to the path (seekers), like-minded individuals and anyone in search of Truth and answers.

For the benefit of family and friends I have also included some information and photos of my earlier political life as well.

“This site is most definitely not intended to be used to engage in debates with people who have antagonistic views about Tasawuf. I do not wish to be drawn into confrontation and arguments with anyone at this advanced age in my life. I am however more than willing to receive questions or constructive comments.”

Books & Articles

The books and articles presented here have been written over a period of several years: They cover my personal journey from the time I attached myself to the illustrious world leader of the Qadiri Shadhili Tariqa, Shaykh Hazem Abu Ghazaleh (RA), up until the present.

My writing expresses my personal understanding of matters based on reading material from:

Shaykh Abdul Qadir Jilani (RA)
Imam Al Ghazali (RA)
Imam Abdullah Al Hadad (RA)
Limited works of Ibn Arabi (RA) and
Lectures and books of my Murshid Shaykh Hazem Abu Ghazaleh (RA)

I do not claim to represent their views correctly and adequately – it is merely my personal and limited understanding which I attempted to capture in writing. All of the above personalities are giants and true knowers of Allah, which means that all of their books contain insights and depths which an ordinary person is unable to fathom.

Knowledge is an Attribute (Sifaat) of our Majestic Creator and is therefore perfect and has no end to it. Only Allah knows everything about everything – none other has this ability.
